KEEGAN
WALMER CONTINUES STRONG YOUNG GUNS SEASON WITH VEGAS WIN
PORTLAND,
OREGON (July 7, 2010) –
14 year-old Keegan Walmer won a back-and-forth duel with a pair
of Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle teammates to win Thursday
night’s USAC Young Guns feature at the Las Vegas Bullring.
The win
marked Walmer’s third straight in Young Guns competition and the
race went caution-free to the approval of the strong crowd on
hand.
After
finishing fourth in the heat race, the driver of the K&K
Motorsports, Reser’s Ford Focus Midget prepared for the 20 lap
feature contest.
Walmer led
the opening five laps before loosing the point to teammate Cody
Thompson. Walmer fell to third on lap nine, but the top-three
cars ran closely together. The leaders were running speeds over
90 miles
an hour down the straightaways on the 3/8ths mile track.
Teammate
Austin Farley assumed the lead position on lap 17 and Walmer
moved into second on lap 18.
Coming to
the stripe at the finish, the top-three cars fanned out for a
three-wide photo finish with Walmer taking the victory by just
.011 seconds.
“That was
one of the best races of the 2010 season for both Keegan and the
entire Young Guns division,” driver coach Ron Sutton said.
“Keegan has been a consistent threat in the Young Guns and will
get a win in the Focus division soon!”
Walmer
also competed in the USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus race that
night at Las Vegas, qualifying fifth out of 16 cars before being
gathered up in an accident in the main event.
On
Saturday, the USAC Ford Focus Midgets and USAC Young Guns
invaded Orange Show Speedway. Walmer qualified and finished
seventh in the Focus race, and added a third place effort in the
Young Guns. In five Young Guns starts, Walmer has accumulated
three wins along with second and third place finishes.
He is
currently ranked second in the USAC Western Pavement Young Guns
points and fourth in the USAC NorCal Ford Focus Midget Series.
Keegan Walmer next race will be on July 17 at Stockton 99
Speedway in Stockton, Calif.
