(May 6, 2010) –
14 year-old Keegan Walmer won the USAC Young Gun feature on
Saturday night at Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, Calif. after
a thrilling back and forth battle with teammate Courtney
Atkinson.
He followed
up the feature win in the Young Guns by coming home sixth in the
USAC Western Pavement / NorCal Ford Focus Series 40 lap main
event.
Walmer began
his busy double-header night by pacing time trials in the USAC
Young Guns with a time of 14.285 seconds around the quarter-mile
asphalt oval.
Driving the
newly completed #24 Reser’s Machine, the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s
Circle sophomore finished second in his heat race and fourth in
the dash.
In the 25 lap
main event, Walmer and Atkinson put on a show that won’t soon be
forgotten. The talented pair had five official lead changes at
the line but many more throughout the constant battle.
Walmer
finally broke through for the win when he took the lead for good
on lap 21. In winning the Young Guns main event, he also has
the points lead in the division.
In USAC
Western Pavement / NorCal Ford Focus, Walmer again showed his
qualifying gusto by timing in second quick at 13.733 seconds.
Walmer came home second in his heat and third in the dash.
Running the
30 lap feature, Walmer moved into fifth past teammate Bobby
Runyan on lap nine. He continued a run through the field by
passing Courtney Atkinson on lap 11 to assume fourth.
Atkinson,
Runyan, and Walmer traded positions rapidly in the final 10 laps
of the race, with Walmer finishing sixth in the final rundown.
Walmer
currently leads the USAC Young Gun NorCal points and is fifth in
the USAC Ford Focus NorCal points. He returns to action on May
15 at All American Speedway in Roseville.
“Keegan
showed us his development as a driver by outlasting Courtney in
the Young Guns,” said Driver Coach Ron Sutton. “He also did a
fine job in qualifying again in the NorCal divison!”
His next race
is scheduled for May 15 at All American Speedway where he is
slated to run double-duty once again.
