WALMER SCORES POLE, TROPHY DASH AND TOP-FIVES AT STOCKTON
PORTLAND,
OREGON.
(April 21, 2010)
– 14 year-old Keegan Walmer drove to a pair of top-five finishes
in Saturday night’s USAC Young Guns and USAC Western Pavement
Ford Focus Midget Series races at Stockton 99 Speedway in
Stockton,
Calif.
Walmer
raced in his 2010 debut with a heavy heart in memory of his
supporter Alvin L. Reser, who passed away at the age of 74 on
April 13, 2010.
Walmer,
competing in his second season for Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle
Driver Development program, finished second in the 15 lap Young
Gun feature and fifth in the 40 lap Western Pavement feature.
The
Western Pavement feature also paid points for the USAC NorCal
Series which Walmer will be running full-time in 2010.
Walmer and
teammate Brandon White staged an epic back and forth duel all
day long in the restricted Young Gun division. Walmer began by
setting the fast time with a lap of 14.342 seconds around the
quarter-mile asphalt oval. He followed that up with a win in the
trophy dash.
In the
main event, Walmer navigated through the pack to move into
second on lap nine. He then closed down on White and fell short
by just .211 seconds at the stripe in a very closely fought
race.
He will
focus on both the USAC NorCal Focus Midget Series and Young Gun
Series in 2010. He proved that his pole qualifying run in last
year’s Turkey Night at Irwindale was no fluke, by qualifying
second fast with a mark of 13.699 seconds. He finished second in
the fast dash before it was time for the 40 lap feature.
Walmer
rolled off the line fourth and maintained that spot throughout
much of the caution-free contest. After 30 laps of the feature
he was passed by teammate Cody Thompson. Walmer ran strong the
final 10 laps but couldn’t catch Thompson.
The strong
fifth place finish in the NorCal feature gave him a nice start
to his championship effort in that class. Walmer is the youngest
driver in the entire USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus Series in
2010 and will turn 15 in May.
“Keegan’s
talent at qualifying a race car is breathtaking,” said Driver
Coach Ron Sutton. “Once he gets the dust blown off from last
season he is going to be a force to be reckoned with!”
His next
race is scheduled for May 1 at Stockton 99 Speedway.
