WALMER KEEPS UP NORCAL CHAMPIONSHIP PUSH WITH VEGAS POLE

PORTLAND, OREGON (October 4, 2011) – 16 year-old Keegan Walmer threw down a pole lap and a pair of top-five finishes against one of the strongest USAC Ford Focus fields on the season on Saturday night at the three-eights mile Las Vegas Bullring.  The Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver leaves Vegas second in the USAC NorCal Ford Focus standings.

17 cars participated in the weekend’s activities with drivers from North Carolina and Utah joining the field for this highly anticipated race.  Walmer showed off his experience at the series’ fastest track by taking quick time with a 15.227 in qualifying.  The pole marks his fourth of the 2011 season.

Walmer started the first 30 lap feature fourth and passed his teammate Jessica Clark on lap six for third.  Walmer chased down USAC Utah points leader Jim Waters and passed the veteran on lap 21.  Moving into second, Walmer and his rival in the NorCal championship Garret Peterson engaged in a thrilling battle for the victory.

At the finish, Walmer came home a close second by just .102 seconds.  The second 30 lap main event was again a fast-paced affair as it went caution-free.

Walmer started deep in the order but slowly moved his way to the front.  By lap three he was up to the ninth position and by lap 13 he had already advanced to fifth.  But with the race going caution-free Walmer ran out of laps to chase down the leaders.

Walmer passed teammate Paul Graham for fourth on lap 20 and took the fourth place finish at the checkered flag.

With the pole, second place, and fourth place efforts, Walmer is just 14 points behind Peterson in the USAC NorCal Ford Focus with the next race scheduled for this Saturday night at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif.

“Keegan has been on a roll lately with his win at Madera a few weeks ago,” Head of Driver Development Ron Sutton said.  “Shasta will be a critical race for Keegan to go for the championship but he is up for the challenge!”
